Conundrum
I don’t really like weddings. There is too much pomp and circumstance, and frankly, they cost too much. In particular, I hate wedding dresses. More often than not, they are ugly and overpriced. To me, it’s a horrendous waste of money to spend so much on a dress you’ll only wear once.
This dislike of weddings poses a bit of a problem as I am getting married. The solution is to have an enjoyable wedding. A private wedding and a separate reception later on for friends and extended family sounds like the thing to do. Simple, right?
I’ve been engaged for three weeks and so far I’ve managed to organize the people, the paperwork, the appointments, and a succinct ceremony. Meanwhile, reception planning is going swell and should be pretty awesome. Everything is taken care of – except the damn dress.
I need to find a dress to get married in.
Not a wedding dress, mind you, but a dress to get married in. None of the current dresses I own would be appropriate since they’re mostly of the little black and printed pattern variety. Is it really so difficult to find an inexpensive white dress that can be worn more than once?
Yes. Yes it is.
My particular problem is that I’m a good 5-7 inches taller than the average bride, and it’s all leg. Dresses usually fit alright in the waist area, but when it comes to the legs they always fall short. Floor length dresses hit me just below mid-calf, while mid-calf dresses fall to just above my knees. Don’t even get me started on above-the-knee dresses. I’m sure I would violate some kind of indecency law.
So I am on a quest! Since I live in the shopping Mecca of Indianapolis, you’d think it’d be easier. Online shopping is out for obvious reasons, so I have no choice but to hop around from store to store until I find my Holy Grail of casual maxi dresses. Hopefully I will resolve this soon and something funny will need to be drawn.

You could get a custom dress… It would cost a bit more and take some time to make, but you’d get something fabulous that fits correctly. I’d suggest Aetas Designs (http://www.aetasdesigns.com) from my own experience, though they’re a little far removed from where you are. Still, I’m sure there’s something in Indianapolis.

Congrats! We opted for a very simple, inexpensive wedding & reception & I have never regretted it. Do you have any friends that sew? I found a simple pattern that I loved (and could wear again), picked out fancy-schmancy fabric & in 2 weeks I had the perfect for me dress. My friend had a blast getting guests to gush about the dress & then telling them she had made it.
And, of course, thank you for doing your comic. I do enjoy it!

You don’t HAVE to get married in a floor length dress. I did it in a knee-length one. Felt great, especially if it’s a summer wedding. ^^ If you have long legs, use them to your advantage!

I actually got my wedding dress on an ebay store. I picked the style, colors, and gave them my measurements. It took about 3 weeks to get the dress, and it fit beautifully, no alterations needed. I took a chance on the online shopping and it ended up being perfect, and my gown was only $168. My wedding is in August. ^.^
Grats on being engaged and I hope everything works out for you. ^.^

You can find a supposed-to-be-floor-length dress you like, that would work as knee-length, and get it hemmed to knee height. My little sis did that for her Homecoming dress.

why not get the floor lenth dress and have it hemmed to be the just right knee lenth? It would be perfect for the sesion and most dry cleaners have the ablity to do such alterations. Myself I have a pritty white dress with blue flowers. why does it have to be pure white?

You don’t have to wear a dress… You could wear a skirt and a blouse. Then you could wear the pieces again, separately if you wanted to.

Let me know how that goes for you. I’m having a casual wedding too, and finding a dress to get married in is proving to be a bitch. Arg.
Hope you’re feeling okay after your crash! And don’t let it make you scared to get back on.
